Sad News

Well I really feel horrible to say this but my tomatoes and some of my pepper seedlings have died.  I think in the end it was the cooler temperatures that I subjected them to one day and then over watering.  Plain and simple.  The plants that have started coming back I haven’t watered at all for about 2 weeks, if you can believe that! I still have some of my

Soil Testing

Today after a bit of work outside we decided to test our soil again.  Last year our soil quality was really miserable.  Only thing that would even grow in the yard was moss and slugs.  We planted a mixture of tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers and squash.  The squash never really produced much other than lots of flowers, which was neat anyways as I made fried squash blossoms with cheese inside.  Super

Seed Saving & Mail Day!

A while ago I posted a blog on Seed Saving where I shared my own idea of storing seeds.  Well imagine how surprised I was when I found that Walmart sells the exact type of container that I wanted to use. So, since they were so cheap(aka affordable) I picked up two of them up.I labeled each container by number so that I can always switch things around later when

When we first planted this bed I threw a bunch of leaves on top in hopes that it would help insulate.  Don’t know if this was a good idea.  I guess I’ll see in about a month! Chilly day out!  32 degrees but the sun is really warm so I figured the day of sun would help some of these guys out.  We’ve had a few die off I think

You learn something new every day

Recently I read a tip from someone about green onions or scallions.  They advised that when you buy from the grocery store, simply cut the lower bottom part off (where the roots are)  and then plant that portion back in the ground.  They advised others that this will then sprout a brand new onion.I was sceptical but I figured what the heck, it’s not like I’m wasting anything so I

Or just about anyhow.  All 4 large beds are now done, the two smaller okra are built but one of them needs soil added.  No big deal.  Two weeks from now we’ll add more.  I’m still debating if nasturiums are going in with the okra or pansies?  Either way, I have to get the seeds started soon. Here’s what we have thus far.  Bed 4 is all the way to the
