Landscaping the front yard

Time to beautify.  Well almost.  The snow is ALMOST gone and soon it will be summer. Our summers are extremely short so I have to hurry and get our front yard looking like something along the lines of the photo here.

We removed many of our trees in our front yard two years ago for a couple of reasons.  First it’s not safe having trees so close to our yard, especially with the forest fire dangers that we experience here in Alaska.  Also we have thought of installing solar panels.  Only issue with where the tree line was before it shaded the roof.  This would have made the solar panel idea impossible and it allowed moss to grow on our roof each summer.  Both were no good.

Also, while we don’t truly love those huge lawns that you usually find in suburbia we knew we wanted to have a small lawn out front with a gorgeous flowering garden that I would plan out.  We need plants that attract beneficial insects and I would like to have fruit bearing trees here and there. I prefer this to be mostly perennials so I do not have to plant loads of new plants each year.  So recently I found this picture I thought “this is ALMOST” perfect.  By the look of the picture this is definitely south of me as I recognize a few flowering plants in this that do not grow in Interior Alaska but I do like the idea of it.

I have some work ahead of me. Once I get the basic perennials planted and wood chips added it’ll look even better. I plan on making a defined edge which will compliment the wild Alaskan beauty around us.

Let me know your thoughts!
