Great Results on seed starting

Great Results on seed starting

We’ve now had a portion of our seeds started since early March and considering that many of these seeds were over 5-7 years old, we’ve had great results on our seed starting! Unfortunately, seeds lose their viability as they age. This means their ability to germinate will reduce. Just like in previous years, we went through our entire seed catalog of stored seeds (which includes over 245 different varieties of

Building a Garden; Alaska Style

Ever since the snow has melted, about a month or so ago, we have been adding bits for our garden.  Buying small bits here and there and all the while waiting for the day when we can really start building.  I knew the day would come, and once it did we would be super busy.  Of course, I was right. In Maryland we started our garden in 2010 and it

Stage 2…Tomatoes & Squash exit stage right

This past weekend the three of us tackled more of the garden.  It had become apparent that the tomatoes, grapes and winter squash were done for the season. No surprise there since we are on the second week of October.  Of course, the weather seems to be attempting to contradict that fact as Wunderground is reporting it is a balmy 86 degrees outside as I write this.  Our preliminary housing

Status of the seedlings

It has now been seven weeks since we started our seedlings and this year, once again, we tried a different way. That’s the way it is with gardening and gardeners in general.  Many ask me as of late to give them advice and most times I’m left stuttering and speechless.  Because most of it boils down to trying something over and over again and just simply finding what works for us.

Moving forward

As usual, when I haven’t written in a while it’s almost always difficult.  I feel the panic rise as I think “OH MY where do I begin?”So, where do I begin? Three weeks ago we started our first sets of seeds.  These ones were the ones we already had on hand and also the ones we knew would be the more difficult to start.  Several types of bell peppers, hot

I’ll take this as a sign that it’s the end.

The end of the okra that is. We have been deciding what to do with our okra plants that, this year, didn’t really produce much.  This is mostly our fault for two different reasons. We planted them too late. We planted them too few. Number 1 was a new lesson.  We didn’t have this issue last year as we didn’t plant garlic two years ago. This year the garlic did not

Preparing for Autumn….The Fall Garden

Yes, we are preparing for Autumn. Even though to us these temperatures make us hardly wince.  To Sourdoughs from Alaska, 60 degree temperatures mean either late spring, early summer or early Autumn.  Still we try to follow the calendar for this area as it seems so do our plants.  I guess they know better than us that it’s time to quit, no matter how hot it still feels to us. Our

Planting our fall garden and other miscellaneous tidbits

Today we FINALLY got around to planting our Fall Garden.  We were supposed to do it last weekend but thanks to Hurricane Irene that got put off a bit. So while I worked on shucking and preserving corn from the farm nearby my hubby plowed the bed closest to the house and prepared it for planting.  A few weeks ago we purchased some sand, more top soil, and a bit

Oh my, where to start!

It’s now been, what? Almost a month and maybe even a week since I’ve written.  I kept having the best intentions to write and then…..something always got in my way. First I injured my left foot while walking through the garden, next, was my laptop which decided right now was a perfect time for an epic fail.  Then next hubby having yet another TDY, while my son and I were

Vermicomposting Week 1& Status of the backyard

Wednesday our little friends arrived in the mail!!!  Approximately 250 of Red Wigglers along with several little cocoons which will hatch later on and provide even more worms. (or as we call them for our son “squirmy wormies”) So Wednesday night hubby and I had to prepare their new home. Luckily enough I had already picked up the rubbermaid containers from Target.  Great deal for $5.99 each.  Not bad! Then
