New Year; the Strive to New Goals

It’s a new year and of course, that means we’re looking forward to where we can strive to new goals to live a more self-sustainable lifestyle. 2020 had its own problems that many across the globe can relate to. For us here at our property it started first with the death of our favorite hen Tess. Next, it continued over to our beloved cat, Horchata, and quickly moved from laying

Top Five tips for lowering an Electric Bill

I write this now, coming from about 4 months, give or take, experience now at reducing our electricity bill each month. Energy here in Fairbanks, Alaska is expensive.  In fact per the US Energy Information Administration only a few other states are higher.  In case you’re curious, Hawaii is the most expensive with New York and Connecticut following.  We’re number four on this list.  Unfortunately for us here in the

Overcoming Obstacles

Four years ago we moved from Fairbanks Alaska to Aberdeen Maryland. I was interested in gardening; loved growing (and sometimes killing) herbs, a potted tomato but no where near what we do now. I played around a tiny bit with aquaponics but I was like any other American who relies solely on the grocery store for my food. When we moved into this house we were confronted with a soggy,

I’ll take this as a sign that it’s the end.

The end of the okra that is. We have been deciding what to do with our okra plants that, this year, didn’t really produce much.  This is mostly our fault for two different reasons. We planted them too late. We planted them too few. Number 1 was a new lesson.  We didn’t have this issue last year as we didn’t plant garlic two years ago. This year the garlic did not

Time for a bit of a catch up

Wow.  It’s been such a long time.  We’ve had so much going on and we’ve been so busy that it’s been hard for me to actually sit down and WRITE!In April we got our pop up camper, something we’ve wanted for about 10 years.  So that has been keeping us super busy as we’ve been camping with our pop up now almost every weekend.  Thankfully, however, we’re taking a break

I think I’ve gotten spoiled.

I never thought this would possibly happen but I guess it has.  Recently due to a potluck at work I needed some tomatoes but I had none ready to pick in the backyard (wouldn’t you know, the tomatoes were ready about 3 days later.  Goes to show you can’t rush a good thing) So I bought some at the grocery store to help top a seven layer dip I made.

Okay, THAT was a big disapointment

Well we finally did it.  We opened the potato bin so see if we had anything there.   And this was the result. What an utter disappointment. No blues, no reds, no any special potatoes. Hardly anything at all.  Depressing.   Still though, I told Edward that “hey this was our second time growing potatoes, our first time growing them THIS way so we should be happy with WHATEVER we get!

Compost Tea = MASSIVE GROWTH

I’ve been looking at photos from the past few weeks, especially since I found some recently on my Facebook page from last year at almost exactly this time, and well….I really have to pat my husband and I on the back. This is what really made the impact. The left side was from last year.  No compost, no raised beds, No compost tea, no extra soil. Nothing. This year we’ve added

Sad News

Well I really feel horrible to say this but my tomatoes and some of my pepper seedlings have died.  I think in the end it was the cooler temperatures that I subjected them to one day and then over watering.  Plain and simple.  The plants that have started coming back I haven’t watered at all for about 2 weeks, if you can believe that! I still have some of my

Status of the onions, more lessons learned, etc

First the wonderful news!  Remember the onion from the blog entry “You learn something new everyday”.  I planted the bottom of a green onion (also called a scallion) and discovered it would grow.  Well this is how it’s doing now! So it appears that not only is this possible to do, but it’s easy as pie, and the onions grow superfast!  I can see no more buying green onions in
