A Series of Unfortunate Events
Yes, Murphy has as of late made himself, or itself at home at our property. Do you know Murphy’s law? It’s more or less based on the idea that a series of unfortunate events will always happen at the worst times. I’ve previously lived by another version of it. One that Military Wives and I called “Military Murphy’s Law”. That one was “what can go wrong, will go wrong…during a
New Year; the Strive to New Goals
It’s a new year and of course, that means we’re looking forward to where we can strive to new goals to live a more self-sustainable lifestyle. 2020 had its own problems that many across the globe can relate to. For us here at our property it started first with the death of our favorite hen Tess. Next, it continued over to our beloved cat, Horchata, and quickly moved from laying
Preparing for winter; Short Summers in Alaska create an amazing race
Here in interior Alaska our summers are short, Autumn happens in a blink of an eye, Break up(or what lower 48’ers call Spring) takes about a month and winter takes over for about six months of the year. This means when the snow has melted fully the race begins to get as much done before the next onset of winter. It always seems like a race. Sometimes we win. Sometimes
Sensational salmon fishing in Valdez Alaska
Every year for the past couple of years we try to do our best to head down to one of the Alaskan coastlines for some fishing. This serves several purposes; it gives us a break from the monotony of always working on projects on the homestead; it stocks our freezer with somewhat locally obtained seafood and we have the ability to spend family time with each other among some pretty
Landscaping the front yard
Time to beautify. Well almost. The snow is ALMOST gone and soon it will be summer. Our summers are extremely short so I have to hurry and get our front yard looking like something along the lines of the photo here. We removed many of our trees in our front yard two years ago for a couple of reasons. First it’s not safe having trees so close to our yard,
A new home…sort of
No I personally have not moved. But my blog has. I touched on this some on my Facebook page recently. I have decided it is timet to jump right in with both feet and get moving to my new website. I’ve been holding back some on this move as it was one that would cost money. The more you read my posts you will see, I’m thinking about living frugally.
Negative 36 with chickens in our garage
The past couple of weeks have been interesting to say the least. Our temperatures here in Interior Alaska have gone from positive temperatures in the teens to lows of -40. While the house is hanging in there, of course, no surprise there. This place was built to last, we have lost a couple of animals and now as of today, the 5th of January, we are housing three chickens in
Winter is coming
Six more weeks till Winter. Or so the story goes told by Alaskan Natives and sourdoughs alike. When the fireweed has bloomed all the way to the top, we have six more weeks till the snow flies. So far this break up and then into summer, we’ve had some successes….and some failures. That’s pretty typical though. The garden is doing well but could be doing better thanks to the late
Caring for our small water garden
Never before have I been responsible for caring for a outdoor water garden. I mean, really, in Military housing, such a thing would be considered to be an extreme luxury so when we moved into our new home and I found myself the owner of a lovely, 1500 gallon pond, complete with a water fall, I found myself a little overwhelmed. What do I do with such a thing? At
